Dinner Time Quiz #3

Picture taken with a Nokia 6680 cell phone

This is my version of a typical meal from Sesimbra, a small village not very far from where I live (actually it is a lot closer to Vitriolica's place, but it doesn't really matter).
Like most of the Portuguese dishes its presentation is very simple and probably not too appealing, but the taste...yummy!
I'll give some help on this: the yellow thingys are potatoes.

laBrugalita: Welcome! No beans, nothing smashed, sorry... if nobody guesses I'll tell what it is by the end of the day.

GG: Ah, but what "fish"?! You got the capers right, the taters I had already given away.

ale: Rice pudding and pineapple? I didn't knew you had contacts!!! And some thick lenses you'd need too if you wore glasses! NO, not caldeirada... caldeirada looks more messy, and you have several kinds of fish mixed in the middle of the potatoes.

This is what us locals call "tintureira" a name that translates roughly to "ink blotter". The common blue shark.
The same recipe can be made from swordfish or marlin. Get some olive oil on a tray, place the taters on it, cover and place in oven for 25 min at 200ºC. Take out of the oven, place fish on tray, add pickled capers, small shrimp, a pinch of salt, some butter, lemon juice and white wine, take back into the oven for another 20 min. You can broil for the last two minutes if you prefer it a bit ‘darker’.

Oh, I love marlin...but we don't have it here :-(

Some shark's edible, but I've never had any. In Trinidad they do fried shark and bakes the way the Brits do fish 'n' chips.

GG: The only two kinds of sharks that exist here are great: they don't attack people and they taste great.

ale: what about the ones with "ão" or "ões"? :P

orange: They used to cook this in Macau and in Taipei, probably there is blue shark in Singapore too.

viking: Now you have the recipe. And it is almost no work to it, most of the time it takes is just sitting in the oven.

yum! but you're right, presentation leaves a lot to be desired. as always. such a shame. I know so many pts who think (rightly) that pt food is fabulous and are blown away when tourists arrive, look at it and say "yuck". (even though I constantly hear old ladies saying things like "oh the eye eats first" etc. time for me to have my own daytime cookery show...whadya reckon???... sorry, dcver, I've gone off on one as usual) ;)

penny lane: tastes delicious too :)

vit: don't be sorry. as for the presentation, I guess our pastry, our 'doces conventuais' make up for it... anyway, when it comes to food taste comes first, one big disappointment with French food is that it usually looks a lot better than it tastes.

ain't that the truth! bloody french food. the best food in the world is VIT food. did you know that?

By VIT food you mean you cooking?
The best food in the world?
Can I come over for dinner?

No kidding now, do you know this Treasure Chest ? Everything is in Portuguese and they don't have an English site, but I guess it makes you no big difference and it really is great.

C'mon! This probably has less calories than a single cup cake. You know the ones I am referring to... near your place, the ones you posted about.
