Gin & Tonic

Watching the sea by the end of the day. Sipping a Gin & Tonic. No hurry.
Sometimes I really need to stop and relax for a few moments.
No company except for the book I was reading and the people passing by.
Alone and yet not lonely.
No music, I had turned off the mp3 player.
Listening to the background noises of strangers around me, seagulls, the splash of the waves...
I've got a nice life, I live in a fairly nice country, I've got problems and worries but I can forget those once in a while. My problems aren't even so big they can take away my sleep nor so serious as to make me panic.
I am a lucky guy.
These last few days have been quite tiring, friends inviting me over for dinner, inviting me to go out at night...
It's always the same.
A few weeks after Good Half going away they start buzzing around, making sure I don't get lonely. Sometimes it's even too much. But I can't complain. They are just making sure I'm ok. And I am. As soon as they see it they give me more slack, but they keep hovering, just in case. In a way it's like having a swarm of guardian angels.
I got to go now, take a quick shower and hurry, friends are waiting for me to go over for dinner.

Sounds like you're counting your blessings Dcver. A wonderful pastime! Keep counting, enjoy your dinner and friends.

You are definitely blessed and for that I may be inclined to dislike you. :)

You're one redeeming quality? At least you are not so smug that you don't realize how lucky you are. Humility becomes you.

You have definitely passed the "sieve" test.
You stick your life into a sieve and give it a good shake. What remains is what really matters.
Contentment, family, friends...

The day we stop getting excited about the simple things in life is the day we might as keel over and wither away...
By the way, dcver it an ocean not a sea! The sea a few hundred miles east!

Yep, I'm sounding like everyone else here, but it's good to have friends like that. Friends who care. Friends who go the extra mile.

Hmm, Dcver hasn't answered his comments...which makes me wonder if he has had one too many gin and tonics last night?? :)

kris: Actually I'll be the one going over to the US in November; yes I have a lot of nice friends and no I am not with a hangover today. In fact I didn't even drink last night, but we did stay out until the early AM so when I got home I didn't even look at the computer. Sorry...;)

GG: Fourth dinner with friends in a week. There is no point in having blessings if one doesn't see them.

bunny jo: What humility? ;)

cream: It is sea, one single big sea. Remember I am Portuguese, when we care to say exactly where we are we say the ocean and even the ocean's name, but when we simply "feel" it we simply say sea. We even go as far as to call it our sea, Mare Nostrum, in the Latin form. One of our idiosyncrasies I guess.

viking: They do go the extra mile and they stay there for as long as you need it.

bent: They really make life easier sometimes. Of course sometimes I also have to get out of my way to help them, but it is worth it.

Looks like you are right, Kris...
Une gueule de bois... (A wooden mouth) is the French for a hangover!
I'd love to know what it is called in Portuguese.

Isn't it uncanny that we posted at the same time? Should have waited 2 seconds and wouldnt've mentioned hangovers.

I get your point about the Mare Nostrum bit...

cream: "Hangover" in Portuguese is called "ressaca".

penny lane: Guess I'm projecting that image because I'm getting old. Even when I get wasted I don't get hangovers. Not that I get wasted often nowadays. But you don't really need to drink to get wild.

It's been far too many years since I had a bad ressaca. I think you learn... moderation and don't mix different types of drinks..eat along with the drinking, and (tip from college years) leave two or three ASPIRIN on your bedstand with a glass of water before you go out, take it before falling asleep and you won't get a hangover!

dcver, you constantly amaze me with your fluency in the English language. You actually know a word like "idiosyncracies" in a second language without looking it up? Impressive! Funny too how we are all used to our little routines (you commenting) and when you don't do it, we wonder where you are! Too funny.

I'm hoping also to be on the Mainland US in November, but much further south, in So. California.

kris: The Portuguese word is not that different - idiosincracias. I started learning English when I was six; throughout college I've studied mostly by books and papers written in your language; I read a lot, both books in my own language and in yours. This explains it, right?

ale: Yup, that's what I always said, they are awesome.
