Superstition

Are you superstitious?
Is there one superstition you believe in?
Which one is that?
Please do use the comments area and share with as all!

It's only fair to confess my skepticism. Yes I'm the kind of guy who steps under ladders, doesn't care if salt gets spilled in the kitchen, walks across the graveyard if it's the shortest route, kicks the black cats (ok, ok, the last one is a hairy lie, but I only don't 'cause I love animals, not because I'm afraid of black kitties)...

Well, you got the picture. What about you?

Dc!! the Big Island is so full of superstitions...I can't believe you left here without "feeling" the mana or supernatural power that DOES exist here... Would I ever not show proper respect to Mme Pele?? Not on your life. Hey you've given me a good idea for a blog post : Haunted Hawaii!!

PS> But as you are a scientist, I would expect an impirical (spelling?) study of everything by you. Good thing GH is also a scientist. You'll probably go on to have twin babies who are artists though!

I laugh HAHA at superstitions...walk under the ladder and so on.

Then I secretly, quietly knock on wood...sheepish grin.

I am superstitious about talking about things you are hoping to have happen. As soon as you do, you're doomed.

Being the contrary person that I am, I defy superstition every chance I can. I've broken more mirrors I care to say (by DROPPING, thank you) and always open the umbrella in the house. However, there is one thing I believe, call it superstition or not....I firmly and 100% believe that you reap what you sow. Call it karma, call it Murphy's Law, call it spiritual truth. Maybe it won't happen right away, and maybe it won't be in a way that is obvious, but EVERYONE, my friends, EVERYONE will reap what they sow.

cadiz: That cursing power thing... does that make you some kind o witch? Does it really work? Are we supposed to beware of it?

kris: I felt magic there all right – the magic of the beautiful nature all around, the climate, the aloha spirit. As for the myths I got myself a couple of books on Bishop’s Museum in order to learn about the local traditions.

GG: Like those people who say: “thank God I am an atheist”. Right… just in case. ;)
Most Portuguese folks are just like that, no matter if you are talking religion or superstition. The people from Galicia (Spain just northern from Portugal) say "yo no creo en las meigas, pero haberlas, haylas" (I don’t believe in witches, but there are some).

ale: Guess everybody has good luck charms. Even I have had a few so far. BUT only because someone ‘special at the time’ would give me something as a charm and ask me to use it, not that I really cared.

phoenix: What about planning man? Does that mean you try to do everything on the spur of the moment? But you talked about your trip to Ole Erin’s Isle . You even posted about it. And everything was great, right?

bunny jo: Hope that is not so ahh…. linear, let us say. If you are right there is a piano somewhere out there waiting to fall on my head. Other than that I guess there must be some kind of balance, after all for one guy to win the lottery some 2 billion suckers bought tickets too.

charlock: Welcome! Relax, the cats part was just a joke. I love animals. Believing in Murphy’s Law only makes you an optimist, not really superstitious. The moment you believe some mumbo jumbo can change Murphy’s Law is the moment you should start to worry. Or not.

vesparosso: I don't really think ESP qualifies as superstition. Somethings can't be explained yet but the mind may in fact be able to do a lot more than we know at the present. I've had a few weird things happening that make me accept that possibility. Thank you for the idea, that may turn into a post one of these days.

My superstition manifests itself during the softball season. If I'm hitting well with a certain bat I keep using it until its "mojo" wears off. And then you have my lucky shorts. I absolutely have to wear them.

Sometimes while running I find myself avoiding the cracks, but that's more OCD than superstition.

lisa: There is something of that kind here too, probably sometime in human past cracks were dangerous or something, maybe that is why so many people in different countries think it is bad luck. But treasuring a memento of someone is not really superstition, I think we all have places or objects that have sentimental value because they remind us os someone or some happy event.

bent: I guess OCD can scramble things a lot, but that bit about softball is not only PURE superstition but is also common to most people who do competition sports, even if it is just for fun. Ridiculous! I mean, one thing are MY lucky boxers, but everything else… ;) Just kidding, don’t really have any good luck charms.

orange raindrops: Sometimes I don’t even wear my wedding band! I wonder if that is the reason I am not rich…

christine: There is an almost universal superstition I have absolutely no idea where it comes from. Everybody seems to do it, but why?

tacit: Please tell me you are not one of those people who keep a half-chewed gum from third grade only because it was a present from your first boyfriend!!! Ticket stubs, shells, rocks, dried leafs and stuff like that I understand, but some things are just gross… :P

tall glass: That karma / balance / retribution thing. Maybe so. But judging by some peoples luck (good or bad) you probably must accept afterlife with that, because retribution doesn't seem to come in only one lifetime.
And relax, you're not that odd. I bet in your own planet there are a lot more like you! ;)
