Buyers ALWAYS have another choice!!!

Take a good look at this piece of news. So basically what the guys at SONY are telling us is that they will go on packing rootkits in their products and if costumers don't feel comfy about it they will have to ask them to have it removed.
Now let us suppose we're talking about an audio CD. When you buy an audio CD and play it on your computer do you check the little book that comes along in the box to check whether it brings an EULA? And how can a costumer know if that audio CD has installed a rootkit if the rootkit is extremely hard to detect even by professionals?
When does someone who sells me a product earn the right to take over my computer?
When does someone who sells me a product have the right to sneak into my house?
If I accept this, next I will probably be accepting the grocer can check if I am also buying taters from the competition.
Companies have the right to fight piracy. That right however can not supercede the buyers rights.
Anyone who knows what a rootkit is will take only one action when faced with one: format the disk and re-install the operating system.
The choice is very clear to me: boycott SONY products. If they have no respect for the consumers, the consumers can show them a company can not survive without clients. And I don't mean just boycott products that carry these rootkits, I'll stop buying SONY, even if we're talking batteries or CD players.

Will you be buying stuff from them?

PS: Here goes the worst part of it, all these artists are released by Sony, and any audio CD might carry their new DRM.

Sony discs are OUT for me from now on!
It is bad enough having to fight off viruses on the net without buying the buggers!

DC, you should be packing, man instead of surfing!
Or are you like me leaving it to OH? So you're off to the US, eh?

No US, until you want inhuman give-me-all-your-money-cos-you-stepped-on-my-shoe and patent laws. Every country has it's issues.
And sign me on the list. Hopefully I have nothing Sony'ish except my monitor tube. Error - I have a very old PS1 but I'm giving it to some child-care soon.

cream: Only now have I realized how many Sony CDs I own. Packing is only at the last moment, and GH is waiting for me there, so I have to do all the packing.

shyha: The hard bit will be not buying audio CDs.

isis: I wonder if Phillips is doing or preparing to do something of the kind.

Yup - it'll be a greatest problem.

Did you (all) noticed? Is this world really going to fullfill Cyber Punk vision? Big companies controlling society, pollution etc. We'll all have brain-chips soon so we can be fully controlled and all our bad behaviours will be strictly punished.

shyha: Orwell wasn't very far from the truth in many of his critics.

isis: I guess I may sound too critical sometimes. I do love technology. I am all for scientific development. But I also believe people have the right to know what is going on and to choose if they want to be part of it. The truth is I still believe the "good people" can force the "bad people" to behave, with fair laws and equal justice and all that.

dcver all this stuff is desterbing to no end. whats even MORE disturbing is that this in not the only thing that's being done by companies. i'm sure a lot of this stuff we have NOT even heard about.

if i could i'd leave right now for a secluded oasis in the amazonian jungle!

soon they'll install a sim cards into our foreheads and send us "commands" followed by electrical shocks....

like i said, i give 10 yrs tops to this civilization

Thanks for the h/u although I would think it's too late from the list of artists.

And if they don't get us this way, they'll get us another, no doubt.

And avoid just Sony? With the way Japanese firms work? Surely it won't be just them.

Hmmm. I'm sure something good will come out of this (he says, optimistically).

Don't worry, one day consumers will talk with their pockets. When consumers learn, they act, eventually.

D...I thought you'd be PACKING to go, man. You are a trip :-D

Have a safe flight, and hope you enjoy yourself, you and Good Half.

jonny: The list was meant mostly to show people that almost surely they will be affected too. I still believe that if consumers all over say no someone will have to review their piracy enforcing tactics.

GG: Consumers could have power, if they weren't so eager to buy what everybody does and would stop to think first instead. I'll pack tomorrow afternoon. And thank you. :)

tacit: Neither had I or anybody. That's one of the reasons it is so bad.

annie: Thanks. I intend to. Hehehehehe

piu: Anytime. Glad to help ya.

Gosh that's disgraceful! I won't be buying any Sony products. It's seems like the consumer is not only having choice removed but that they can't enjoy products without corporations breathing down their neck. And corporations like Sony do this whilst ripping off the consumer with the prices that they have to pay. How invasive is that practice?!

well, I might be a fundamentalist, but I stopped listening to metallica when their drummer, lars ulrich, killed napster. Ill continue this as far as I can, that also means I bought my last sony product... So lars ulrich; what youve started is nothing but a civil disobedience campagin against yourself! And sony, try that with your pr section!!

frightening. good god what else have they tampered with, milk?

NML: Have you noticed the warranty forms and registration forms evolution? At first they would ask you for your name and address, nowadays they ask you tons of unrelated questions. How 's that for invasive?

penny: Thanks, I'll do my best to do so.

isa, isae: Metallica's quest against napster was a big disapointment for me too.

cadiz: Have you checked any news related to RFID and privacy? What about RFID and human implants? THAT is scary.
