Praia de Carcavelos. One of the most famous beaches on the coast between Lisbon and Cascais.
Carcavelos is a village also famed by the Feira de Carcavelos, a flea market on every thursday.
This flea market differs from most others in Portugal due to the fact that among the clients you can find lots of "tias".
What's a "tia" you ask? "Tia" is what normal people call the uptight up-scale-wannabe narrow minded and dim witted women that dream of becoming members of the so-called Portuguese "high society".
By "high society" they don't mean those who have more money or power, they mean those who make it to the magazines.
Again, if you pick a dictionary you will come across a very different definition of "tia", it will simply translate as "aunt". Such is life.

Can't tell you how much I'd like to be walking along that beach right now.
*sigh*.

Your tias sound a bit different from the ones we have in London - the ones who aspire to be in magazines tend to hang out in bars, not fleamarkets...

I want a beach that's as clean as yours!

I'm fascinated by tias and snobby women. I like to sit and watch and listen. Poor things.

They're amusing.

annie: LOL But they only go to that particular flea market. And it's because it's in a neighborhood where you find most of them "tias", they kind of "herd" there.

GG: Amusing? Maybe at first. But after some time putting up to their idiocy… well, you’ve probably read Vit’s side of the story and this comes as nothing new.

cave renovator: Welcome! And thank you. I’ve just linked to your blog, I’m curious about your works, hope you post some photos of your progress! All the best to you guys.

isis: I have a few not-so-pleasant elements in my family too, but they are kind of distant as far as blood is concerned and tottaly apart as far as eveeryday life. Guess you have at least a few of those in every family.

in a way i'm envious of "tias" because they seem to have this "project" that makes them excited and busy - sure, there are much better projects to be involved in, but there are also worse ones as well.

ale: Envious? Of "tias"? Their project is their image. That's simply shallow. Don't think I could ever feel real respect by someone whose life goal is to be envied.

Cris: Achei que a resposta era um pouco longa e enviei por mail. Boa sorte.
