Another Hero
Some of you may have heard about Aristides Sousa Mendes.
Many people have, mostly Jewish people.
Yet, whenever his name comes about, it doesn't seem to matter whether in Portugal or abroad, most people seem to ignore the name although a few do vaguely remember the events that made him famous.
He was the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux who defied his own government issuing visas to more than 30000 Jews fleeing from the Nazis.
Salazar, the dictator who was ruling Portugal, was not a man to forgive someone who had disobeyed his direct orders, he called the consul back to Lisbon immediatly.
Such attitude towards the refugees granted him being discharged of his functions as soon as he got back in Portugal and loosing all that he had.
He died in poverty and only after the regime had fallen was his name rehabilitated.
But he stood to his principles and kept his honor.
In these times we are living in, with so much religious hatred resurfacing, maybe his gesture should be remembered a bit more.

These are the true heroes of history. Thanks for telling us about him.
Unsung heroes! So many of them slip through the net!
I believe it is thanks to many ordinary people that the world still retains a wee bit of conscience!
Hail, the unsung hero!
What a brave, truly good man.
I keep wondering if there are heroes all around us, but the media don't speak about them.
i bet GG- they're only talked about if some kind of political or monitary agenda can be fullfilled-
mainstream media especially is nothing but a vehicle to make money-
Ale, I agree. A reporter even TOLD me this!! But I also wonder, if journalists started writing about the good stuff, would people READ? Or do we only want the bad stuff?
Hey, did anyone see this: '7 days, 23 hours 43 minutes before my holidays'? Guess where!
kris: Don't thank me. :)
cream: I wish people like him were more "ordinary", easier to find that is...
GG: He did exactly what most people fear: risked all he had. I'm afraid most people stop caring about others the moment they realize they risk something.
And yes, that is my countdown!!! :D
ale: The media give the masses what the masses want; the masses want what they are used to get from the media. The cycle repeats on and on...
I've heard of several newspapers and even television shows that attempted to report only 'good' news.
Guess what?
Nobody cared. They folded.
We're all part of the problem, something in our nature makes us take more notice of ugliness or potential danger than beauty and celebration.
Present company excluded, you've got some gentle souls commenting here on your blog DCver.
chill daddy- i think i would like to read only good news, as childish as it may sound
-that's why i ONLY read financial times... because it presents only good news.
-"there is a war..." - but HEY good news its making more money for so and so
-"there is a flood..." - but HEY good news its creating new jobs for so and so industry...
-"a company went out of business ... etc etc...
this way at least i get unbiased news events--
all other papers try to feed you their ideal...
chill daddy: "Panem et circenses", still and always. The herd wants to watch some "action" on a full belly and the is about it. And maybe gentle souls tend to flock together above their personal differences. ;)
ale: I would prefer to have the ‘real’ news, not a pink restricted view neither the media capitalizing on pain, suffering and scandal.
Tall glass: Rosa Parks was “tired”, most people today aren’t “tired”. Sometimes I get the feeling if only a number of people around this planet were as “tired” as Rosa Parks was they would stop condoning with injustice and start to change this world.
