Getting bald...

...really is nothing compared to this!!!
Thousands of years of grazing and stomping, that bit is known.
But the cattle is long gone. Shouldn't mankind take a good look at this and start doing something to fight the desert growth? This is what is happening. The United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, they all have showed the world that with money to invest the desert can be pushed back. Now is the time to do it.
This should also be a warning to those allowing the destruction of Amazonia.

DC, The picture of vanishing Lake Tchad is frightening!
But I doubt whether anything will be done until it is too late!

The only way out is the Kyoto Agreement but guess who aren't prepared to sign up to it!

not to be pessimistic... but we're all doomed sooner or later- actually sooner than later. i wonder when governments will reveal the underground migration bluprint..? or are we straight up going to another planed to crap it up? i wouldnt be surprised if they build this "pseudo" earth that will float in the universe and will have artificial gardens and beaches and stuff... but honestly i think we are this "lucky" generation that will see it all go to the toilet before people start arranging for alternative living environment.

cream: Being the strongest won't help much after our ecosystem is busted. At some point Man will hurt this planet beyond its ability to recover.

isis: Our four walled personal worlds won't protect us if the big world around them colapses. We have to try and do something, no matter how little our influence may seem. Even avoiding to waste paper is something helpful.

ale: Not to be pessimistic?!? Wow. I guess YOUR pessimistic view would be along the lines of "Mankind won't make it til the end of the week". However I don't think there will be an underground escape nor any other escape. We've been granted one planet, no second chance after screw this one.

The destruction of the Amazon by my neighbours UPSETS ME TOO MUCH and I can never think about it without getting worked up.

And Lula's govt. is in such mess right now, I don't see how they can stop any sort of destruction.

I'd like to speak up on behalf of those that have chosen to procreate; first off, having a bunch of kids ROCKS, they make life worth living, secondly, it's too late for me to undertake a career path that leads to saving the planet from certain destruction, but I've got four more shots in the sharpening process.

I have an optimistic opinion myself... but not from the human point of view.

I think that the planet has its own ways to getting itself rid of the plague of Homo sapiens... it's quite obvious: people are dying all over the globe in consequence of the disrespect towards nature and the environment.

Mother Earth has had the patience of a saint but all that people and governments think about is easy money... eventually everything will be put into balance.

tall glass & ale: I hope that is not the solution, after all that is still loosing.

GG: I know what you mean, I've just been seing some photos a friend has taken near Manaus.

chill daddy: To a point I agree with you. Not that I am too confident, but I am never one to give up.

dauphine: Welcome and thanks.

ariadne: Do you think the roaches will do a better job?

cadiz: People tend to ignore it because they believe nothing will happen in their lifetime.

We get daily news about Brasil in our papers, so we see stuff that others don't get to see often :-( Did you see the photo of the riverbed so dry, and the fish all dead?

GG: I've seen several pics and I couldn't believe that was the Amazon river. I had never heard about such a draft there.

When I lived in Sub-Saharan Africa, we knew that the desert was moving south at the astonishing rate of like 10 miles per year. Dust and sand would blow right in our house at certain times of the year. I see that where I used to live (Dakar, Western most tip) is now in the desert zone.
