R U lucky?
Yes, you! Are you lucky? What was the luckiest thing that ever happened to you? Can you even answer?
Chill daddy's and ariadne's comments from yesterday got me thinking.
I am a lucky guy, I've said it before and it really is true. Maybe not in the gambling sense of it but in general things turn out fine for me even if at first they seem quite bad. And yet, if you were to ask me this same question I wouldn't be able to answer it. So many things it's hard to pick one.
Here in Portugal people sneer at folks like me and say "nasceste com o cú virado para a Lua". This sentence means "you were born with your ass facing the Moon". Now, if you are just about to ask me about the origins of this expression or its meaning, forget it. I simply don't know. I wish I did though, after all people say it to me so often that I really should try and dig into the subject.
Oh, and this does not mean that everything I am and have are fruit of luck alone, mind you!

i'd have to say my luck hasn't been so much about certain incidents in life, but defintely in the people i've bumped into along the way.
ass to the moon, eh? that's something.
If I look at my life I could say that I had a lot of luck.
Btw there were two times when someone asked me to buy him a lottery ticket. Both times were lucky, although no big money has been won. Interesting is the one was the present for the third person. I'm sure it was just an accident :)
Car parking spaces!
I am lucky with car parking spaces.
Wherever I go I always manage to get one as near to my destination as possible.
Anyone as fortunate as me out there?
I'm blessed.
And I work hard and make sound decisions.
There is something to this 'luck' thing but I'm gonna have to say that random chance doesn't seem to affect the overall quality of a person's life unless you're in some horrible accident or catch a disease or, even, die.
Most of the unhappy, miserable people that I know make poor decisions and then suffer for it. Listen up, People, delay gratification and work for the good thing.
Well... my life isn’t tragic but it isn’t that lucky either... I usually say “I was born with my butt facing the centre of the planet”… hahahaha… which means that I have a lot of good stuff happening around but it’s never by chance. Guess my greatest fortune are my friends – I have this way of getting people to like me (Goddess knows why!…) and therefore consider myself really lucky: I’m never alone and there is always someone to lend me a hand at overcoming the trouble I get myself into. To be quite honest, I spend most of my life getting into trouble… or trouble just happens – anyway, the lucky part is that I’m able to deal with it somehow.

cadiz: Sometimes bumping into a stranger who helps us is luck, no?
shyha: Lottery is something I can't brag about. I seldom buy lottery. The few times I have done so I've won little more than what I spent at best.
cream: That is a great one!
chill daddy: If the falling piano lands right next to you but you come out unharmed random chance is on your side, though.
ariadne: If you get into trouble and come out ok that may mean something.
During my freshman year of college I was appointed to be the person to register for the next year's housing. But then I lost the little card that gave me the time and date that I was allowed to register my roommates and I for our next year's housing.
When I realized that I lost the card, I called the housing office and was told that I'd already missed the day. Because I missed the time, I had to wait til' the very end and just take whatever dorm rooms were left.
Our three top choices for dorm buildings were taken.
Then, in the only remaining dorm, the floors we wanted to live on (those that we already had friends living on) were also taken.
We were stuck with the fifth floor at the end of the hallway. The three of us, miserable about our crappy location, were ultimately very happy indeed. We ended up living across the hall from:
-a girl who would later introduce one of my roommates to her brother, who she married. They're expecting their first baby in January.
-a girl who another of my roommates fell in love with (up to this point, she had only dated boys), break up with, and begin dating her friend--a Spanish tennis player
-that Spanish tennis player became a huge, huge, huge fan of a Portuguese guy I had recently started dating and constantly encouraged me to invite him to every party, movie and campus event that a foreigner living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin might be interested in. I'm married to that Portuguese guy (so, when he insults the Spanish, he has to be very careful to exclude that Spanish tennis player from his silly rantings).
Two happy marriages and one realization of homosexuality later, I feel pretty damn lucky I lost that card.
i believe you can MAKE yourself lucky, that is- luck has a better chance of finding you if you make yourself available.
i always visualize what i want to happen and no matter how crazy it is i usually "get lucky" and it happens, but i feel only because i start working towards it-- and along the way something surely comes along to help me along in a lucky way!
also i think one just have to keep their eyes open and be smart enough to use the things or situation around them for benefit - and realize that luck can come from anywhere and when you least expect (like portuguesa's story)
Ditto, Ale, every word!
Real luck though is what happens to Cream and parking. Wooo boy, that IS luck!
Some days, I'm waiting to be lucky [when I find a publisher I will feel VERY lucky!]
isis: I'm sorry if the image got stuck on your head, I really have no idea on where it all comes from.
portuguesa: That is exactly the kind of thing that happens all the time. Something that seems to be bad happens but after one or more twists it turns out it was for the best.
ale & GG: Yes, I fully agree. That is why I said I don't owe everything to luck. We do have to make things happen.
penny: I don't know if you are lucky or not, but blessed you are for sure. At least I think great kids are a blessing, am I wrong? :)
It's all in the attitude...I generally have a pretty sunny outlook and then generally good things seem to happen! But we have all known those types who see to have a little black cloud over their heads... and somehow seem to be the ones who have put that cloud there, but may not realize it.
kris: If you think you'll miss the target your hands will shake. If people get in their minds the little black cloud is there it will be there indeed.
