One of the things I love in Lisbon this time of the year is the smell of chestnuts being roasted. You can find people selling chestnuts all over Lisbon. Well, they are not so many that you bump into one in every corner. But the aroma of fresh roasted chestnuts guided me right into this one. In these sunny-but-cold days it really feels nice to have a few warm chestnuts and wander through the streets a bit without haste. |
And as I strolled I ran into the Christmas decorations. Yup, that's right. They are already setting the Christmas decorations in Lisbon. Can you believe this? And the shops already have Christmas decorations too. I guess in early December they will take everything off and start placing Easter Bunnys and eggs instead. I swear I can't understand this "selling fever". Is it just me or is this nuts?

Well, I then decided it was time to have lunch. After lunch I still had some free time before heading to the dentist again, so I drove to Parede (another seaside village near Lisbon) and decided to take a little nap by the shore.
I'm really enjoying this cell phone's camera. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm worse than a kid when it comes to gadgets. |

Very good pictures for a phone-camera.
Chestnuts! Love them! Same in Algeria when I was a kid.
Here, the only place I've seen them being roasted in the open is York.
I sometimes buy them and roast them myself, not forgetting to score them with sharp knife.
They don't taste the same as those in a paper cone, though!
And, yep! Xmas is here...
D,
Impressed with the quality of your photos. My camera which has a quizillion megabillion pixels is not a quarter as clear and I can't blow up the picture on my pc without the pixels (all zillionbillionmegamillion of em) becoming obvious. Maybe they have better mobile phones in Portugal. Appropos roasted chestnuts I like the smell but not the taste. In Manchester in winter they roast them on coals at street corners though I think it's the sulphurous coal smell that I really like.
cream: They taste better because they make you feel confy when you're out on the cold! :)
dan: I love chestnuts. Roasted, baked, boiled, chestnut icecream, chestnut cake. Everything. Usually I post pix taken with one of the real cameras, but given the right light this phone can make some nice shots. It's a Nokia 6680.
penny: I confess we always buy most of the gifts before the end of October for the simple reason we spend less, it seems all the prices go skyhigh for Christmas around here. So if they start 'their' Xmas this early we don't get the chance to shop before they raise the damned prices... :(
oh my god, we had the first day of snow here... about 4cm... And then it gets warmer, and everything is like living in a tasteless slush... everything is slushy; dripping from the roof, covering the ground and falling from the sky... and I really hate that...
Just so you know, I *hate* the smell of roasting chestnuts.... I do however like your pics!
We don't have chestnuts here, we have peanuts, warm roasted peanuts sold in small brown paper bags. And if someone is eating and meets a friend, they share.
What a great day you had, wandering the streets and go to the beach and sleeping and everything.
I swear I can't understand this "selling fever". Is it just me or is this nuts?
It's nuts.
i like roasted pumpkin seeds, myself, which are very in season right now here.
very good quality from the cameraphone.
my friend works for a large retailer, and i believe currently they're working on their spring line of merchandise. christmas was done somewhere around march.
isa, isae: Hope it starts snowing in Oregon too, so I can do some snowboarding while I am there!!!
nml: LOL Don't come to Lisbon in the next few weeks then! Wait 'til the cold and the chestnut sellers are gone. ;)
GG: Sometimes I do get off work at noon or I do take a day off. To compensate for the days I spend like 14 hours there or for when I have to work through nights and/or weekends.
viking: Thanks.
cadiz: As long as they are not starting to sell their Spring, stuff... Gosh!
Found the name of that movie(at last), and its "Des nouvelles du Bon Dieu", made by Didier Le Pecheur... Could not find an english title though...
There are no chestnuts here in Poland :/ and I don't know their smell neither the taste...
What temperature do you mean by saying "sunny-but-cold" ?
And christmas selling fever - you're normal :) I have just the same thoughts. Hopefully the season hasn't started here yet :D
isa, isae: Great! Thanks a lot. I've just read the synopsis, I'll try and get it.
Shyha: I guess I should say cold by our standards, about 18ºC. It gets a lot cooler, last year we even had -4ºC in December, but nothing like Poland or northern Europe. Are you going to France this winter? They have chestnuts there and in some places they roast them on the streets just like here.
I am due for a change of Mobile and Nokia 6680, it will definitely be!
Unfortunately no.. I'm broke right now :/
It's interesting. We had over 21ºC yesterday and it seems to be similiar today. We have very warm autumn this year.
I would say if they are just starting the Christmas stuff they are late. Ours has been out since last month. No, really!!
Maybe you can arrange to have Mondays off, or parts of Mondays off, Dcver :-)
cream: Every brand is pushing new models into the market by the dozen, you can probably get something even better.
shyha: Being broke is something of a constant for us lately! The weird thing is the weather being nicer in Poland... that bit is strange.
kris: That is beyond reason!!! One of these days they'll start selling xmas stuff in February.
GG: Sometimes I do have Monday off, or at least Monday afternoon off. But that usually means I've worked through the weekend. Not much better in fact.
