Lisbon's Oddities
In the old days craftsmen of a same art or traders of the same goods would gather, this way in the older parts of Lisbon we have several streets that got their names from the traders or artisans who made their business there:
Rua do Ouro (Gold Street – Goldsmiths)
Rua da Prata (Silver Street – Silversmiths)
Rua dos Correeiros (Leather-workers St.)
Rua dos Fanqueiros (Clothes sellers St.)
Etc…
Related arts or products would also be in nearby streets.
This pink palace on the picture is Palácio das Necessidades, the palace where the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is located.
The street name plaque on the other picture is just one street away from the said palace, it translates to “Smugglers St.”. Again related trades can be found in the same area.

E esta hein? i feel truly ashamed now for being so clueless. have many times walked those streets and did not know the history behind their names. well you learn something everyday, they say. i sure have! :)
coffee addict: Sometimes all it takes is one good highschool history teacher. I didn't even use to like history 'til I got one such teacher.
This is hilarious !!
Nice to find out that some things still make sense in Portugal...

curious how politics and illegal activity seem to intersect circles, isn't it?
interesting stuff, we plan to visit Portugal in the near future too, any recommendations on places to go?
ariadne: There had to be a connection somewhere. :)
cadiz: Are those in different circles at all?
CR: Have you ever been to Portugal? From N to S: Gerês, top NW region of the country; Senhora da Graça; Aveiro, the Portuguese "Venice"; Óbidos, walled city (pics in my archives); Sintra (more pics in archives); Lisbon, walking across the older neighborhoods; Évora, in Alentejo.
oh thats a gem dcever!!
hahahhahahaha :)
D,
I'd love to live on Smugglers Street, or Arson Avenue, maybe a small pied-a-terre in Garrotte Gardens, just across from Burglar Boulevard, that runs below poisoner's penthouse. Wonder what property prices are like?
dan: If you are considering any property within Lisbon's city limits the prices are way too high.
