On a lighter note

All this talking about our revolution brought to mind the song everybody kept singing in the first years after the revolution. A song that is one of the first memories to everybody in my generation here.

Somos Livres

by Ermelinda Duarte

Ontem apenas

Fomos a voz sufocada

Dum povo a dizer não quero;

Fomos os bobos-do-rei

Mastigando desespero.

Ontem apenas

Fomos o povo a chorar

Na sarjeta dos que, à força,

Ultrajaram e venderam

Esta terra, hoje nossa.

Uma gaivota voava, voava,

Asas de vento,

Coração de mar.

Como ela, somos livres,

Somos livres de voar.

Uma papoila crescia, crescia,

Grito vermelho

Num campo qualquer.

Como ela somos livres,

Somos livres de crescer.

Uma criança dizia, dizia

"quando for grande

Não vou combater".

Como ela, somos livres,

Somos livres de dizer.

Somos um povo que cerra fileiras,

Parte à conquista

Do pão e da paz.

Somos livres, somos livres,

Não voltaremos atrás.

Just yesterday

We were a silenced voice

Of people saying no;

We we’re the king’s fools

Gnawing in despair.

Just yesterday

We were a crying people

In the gutter of those who by force,

Shamed and sold

This land, today our own

A seagull flew, flew,

Wings made of wind

Heart made of sea

Like her we’re free

Free to soar

A poppy grew, grew,

Red scream

On a field somewhere

Like her we’re free

Free to grow

A child said, said

“when I grow up

I won’t go to war”

Like her we’re free

Free to say

We’re a people closing ranks

Off to conquer

Bread and peace

We’re free, we’re free

We won’t go back

D, my isp gave up on me yet again. I'm sure it's a lovely song.

GG: It's not a great song, musically it is very simple and not very good, but it carries a lot of meaning. Sorry you can't listen to it.
