Election Day
Today is election day. People are choosing their mayors, their city councils, all their local representatives.
Even the Chief Prosecutor of the Republic ordered the charges held against four of the Mayor candidates of four Portuguese cities to be put on hold, so there would be no influence on the elections, should they be incarcerated.
That is exactly what you read, no point in reading over and over, I really wrote that.
We have four criminals running for Mayors. Some of you may remember a previous post about one of these cases, Fátima Felgueiras. Well, there are three more Isaltino Morais, Valentim Loureiro and Avelino Torres.
I admit that according to our legal system they have not been convicted yet so they are still only suspects. But I think that if they are charged with corruption, embezzlement and other charges it would be all the more reason for the courts to speed up the processes so that people could vote knowing the truth about these people. Not that it would mean people wouldn’t vote for them, by now it would be no big surprise if they won even if they were behind bars.
And you know what? They sure are going to be elected.
I guess little towns like mine, in Lisbon’s suburbia, won’t make the front pages of the newspapers tomorrow, not unless our Mayor is murdered or gets runned over by a penguin driven bus full of Martians in drag.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love this country. Loving this country is the reason why it hurts so much to see these scoundrels running for office when they should be running the cell block’s patio for exercise!!!
PS: POST FOLLOW UP - One of the crooks did not manage to get elected, Avelino Torres won't be a Mayor. All other said crooks had amazing majorities, proving that their neighbors won't be robbed by anyone else.

Sadly, countries all over the world have scoundrels for leaders. The U.S. being the number one in the world for that dubious distinction.. although, it looks like Cheney and Carl Rove will NOT get immunity and will have to tell what they know about the Plame affair. And whether they had anything to do with leaking a CIA operative's name in order to retaliate at a former ambassador who found no proof Iraq was trying to obtain nuclear weapons and said so publicly.
Is this what we elect these clowns to do?
kris: Guess so. After all it seems it's happening the same everywhere...
ok, apart from the whole thing being very wrong-- criminals should not be mayors- that's just logical, but apart from that-- this was the most hillarious thing i've read in a while - i love the last sentense---
hey dcver- lucky for you good half is in the states because you'll need a new continent to go to onece this post gets around ;)
It is an election day for me too. We are choosing new president. My thoughts are similiar to yours.
Btw. awesome pic of the day!
Most politicians are scoundrels, even if they started out with good 'intentions'
My brief involvement in politics at the state level revealed what nml says, above. Most of the people I met started out with good intentions... andcertainly they much of their time was volunteered. But I think once you get to the higher levels, you have to spin more, pander more and BS more to keep yourself elected. I have since STOPPED supporting one of our Hawaii congressmen, Ed Case, as he is sounding like Bush-Light, voting for Iraq and defending the war and such Forget him!
ale: Never! I'll stand my ground! ;)
rjm: Welcome! Glad to be of service!
shyha: I thought things weren't this bad in Poland.
nml: Some years ago I would say otherwise, but since the time a man I thought to be honorable became a minister and got to be worst than most other in his government I'm afraid you are probably right.
kris: At a county level the blokes around here are pretty honest, but above that I have my doubts too.
Sad but I think that corruption is now the oldest profession in the world.
Prostitution has been pushed into second place as it is not as indecent...
People get what they deserve... they vote for them !!! Even knowing what kind of people they are ! Everything fits... and personally I don't have the gut to listen to peolple grumbling about the crapy politicians after voting for them again and again.
BB
cream: Definitely not as indecent!
ariadne: But what about those who don't vote for them? Those who loose again and again?
True. Not that bad. Hopefully.
One of the candidates (he is out of the race now) has something like 20-30 prosecutions against him, but it's not on the level of 'your' politics.
