Pieces of Portugal

This little white house in the middle of those marsh looking grounds is an old tidal mill.
Marshy place to the right is the tidal dam and the water on the other side is ‘baía do Seixal’, a nice bay on the Tagus river, across from Lisbon and just a few minutes away from our place.
Back in the day when the mill was still working the dam would be open during tidal rise and then closed nearly until low tide. At low tide the water was driven through the mill’s water wheels powering its grinders.
Nowadays the place was converted into an eco-museum showing the visitors some peculiar aspects of the ecosystem in the bay.
When GH and I started dating we used to go there once in a while and yesterday I decided to take a little walk there, but the access was closed because they are repairing the building and the grounds around it. At least I could get close enough to take this pic with the cell phone.

Woo, good cell phone pic.

We have a similar system working here to this day, it was built by the Dutch when Guyana was briefly owned by the Dutch. The 'dam' is called a koker...works with the tide.

Guyana was owned by the Dutch, French, English at various times.

They had fights and they divided up the whole territory...so there was British Guiana [us, now Guyana], Dutch Guiana [now Suriname], and French Guiana [now Cayenne...I think that's how it's spelt].

We have some weeeeird Dutch names here...I can barely spell them. And we believe that the Dutch 'jumbies' [ghosts] are the wickedest...don't know why. Not that anybody's ever seen one...
