No iPOD for me thanks

I've tried the regular iPod, the mini and the shuffle.
The normal iPod is too bulky to carry around.
The mini as two major drawbacks as far as power is concerned: the batteries get ‘memory effect’ very fast and even if it had good batteries you always need to have a computer nearby to charge via USB or firewire, not my choice…
The shuffle is simply not my choice because without display it's not possible to browse through the musics. No point in buying any of the three, as far as I can see it.
To carry around I've got an iRiver 795, small as a lighter, one rechargeable AA battery that lasts about 16 hours, at home I can plug one of the computers to my amp, in the car I can play mp3 cds on my car radio or plug in the iRiver. No battery issues, no lcd display issues.
Oh, right, not fashionable...
Well, my point is exactly that: iPod sells because it’s THE fashionable player, but most iPod buyers don’t even compare it with other players, they just go with the herd. As usual…

Classy (iRiver 795). Friend of my has one. Quality of sound which couldn't be defeated easily. Take a look at iAudio stuff which has an opinion of the only iRiver competitor (there's an alternative of CreativeLabs also).

I think that iPod is over-advertised too, but i really like its design.

iAudio has great players too and their players can handle a great number of different codecs. Their sound is great, but the supplied headphones aren't very good, upgrading the headphones is almost mandatory, but this also happens with most others.

I must admit, as much as I like my Ipod, it does have some very annoying deficinecies.

phoenix: none of the players is perfect, but several seem much better than the pods

ale: did it ever let you down?

viking: I guess Shyha is right, it's the power of over-advertising

bees knees: but don't take it from me, shop arround, you may find something you like better

Don't have one, don't need one. My MP3 doesn't even compare but it has served me well thus far.
