Fair enough, when one can afford it
Some of you surely have heard about Fairtrade.
This organization is having a great success, although they are selling produce at higher prices.
Against all logics? Economy was not supposed to work this way?
Well, it seems people like to do good deeds.
If those deeds are affordable that is.
I know about this foundation. I think their work is great. I think that whoever has the chance to support them, one way or another is doing something valuable.
But…
Yes, even here a but. And a butt also, a nice cute butt who’s owner seemed a nice cute girl when I first met her.
Wrong first impression. Oh, and after a few moments I wanted to kick that butt I mentioned.
The cute girl with the cute butt was writing research news to try and sell to some magazine (freelance reporter) because she says if this foundation can have such success every company should operate in the same conditions and governments should overtax all the other products in order not to allow these companies that exploit the producers to compete with the fair traders.
Right…
Then the price of everything will go up. Ok, no big deal, this cute little English piece of butt already buys everything she can from the fair traders! And would you know?! She doesn’t spend that much money!
Of course all those families all over the world that are struggling to have enough money to feed their children could afford to pay a bit more for just about everything, or maybe they couldn’t.
There are bad solutions and there are ideal solutions for any problem. The ideal ones are not always the best solutions, weird as it may seem.
Somewhere in between there is a balance of what is possible to do without creating bigger problems than the ones we are trying to solve.

Did your wife read this?
Haha...I was wondering the same thing, about the wife. That was great post D. So much work needs to be done regarding fair trade... there is so much inequality in this world of ours...
hugo: Unlike some people seem to think marriage DOES NOT affect vision. Like when you go to a restaurant and you already know what you are going to have you can still read the menu.
ms bees: yes, a lot has to be done, but whatever is done shouldn’t create bigger problems than the ones to solve, also there will never be a really ‘fair’ division of the cake, some people will always get bigger slices, as for Good Half, guess u already read my answer to hugo…
Here's my take on the whole 3rd poverty thing.
Many Third world politicians are at fault and should be held accountable.
What did they do with the funds they were given to develop the country, build infrastructure, create jobs?
I'm not saying ALL 3rd world leaders do this...but I bet if you looked at many 3rd world countries, many have been destroyed by thieving, corrupt 3rd world politicians.
I think when 3rd world countries are given funds, their govts should be made to account for every cent, how it is spent. Donors should be there, watching, peering, checking.
As for political reform!
And by the way, I say all this based on my 3rd world experience, and also based on what other 3rd world writers, etc. say.
When it comes to this Fairtrade Foundation it seems that things really work, because they work directly with the producers, they check everything not just down to the estate owners but to the actual farmers and employees.
Dcver, this might sound terribly cynical, but until there is political reform in many 3rd world countries, Fairtrade will help some...and the darn thieving politicians will find a way to take it from the people.
