Strelitzia reginae. Or estrilicia, as it is called in Portuguese. A flower commonly known as "bird of paradise".
This flower, originally from South Africa is very common in Madeira and has become one of the symbols of the island.

The first time I saw that flower was in Australia, I was going for a walk. I almost flipped. It really does look like a bird.

growing up in Hawaii, these were everywhere. We used to gather them and make up stories of how the birds had been transformed into flowers.

glitzy: They're quite popular here, although they don't grow in mainland Portugal.
