This is a scan of an old photo of Lisbon's Oceanário.
One of the places a visitor to Lisbon should never miss. Biased as I am you'd all think it would be suspicious were I to say this is one of the best aquariums in the world.
Alas, I won't say it... but it really is worth a visit.

What fascinating building. Is it standing in water? Was it built in the late 60's- early 70's?
GG: It has been built inside a marina but it is not floating, it only seems to be, it was built in 1998 and it was part of the World Exhibition held in Lisbon that year (Expo’98). If you follow the link you can have a virtual tour of the aquarium.
Oh my god, I'm probably biased too, not because I'm Portuguese, but because I haven't been to all that many aquariums, but I can't imagine how you could improve upon Lisbon's. It is sooooooo very amazing. I had to be convinced, and then basically forced by my husband to go, because I felt I could see fish swimming around anywhere...I wanted to see Lisbon...I'm so glad I went. What a fabulous, fabulous place. It makes me really excited to have kids some day. They'll love it.
D,
There's a wonderful aquarium/oceanarium in La Rochelle a bit up the coast from you that I visited a couple of years ago. It was really impressive. There's another excellent one near Liverpool and also one near Hull. Great places to visit.
portuguesa: Some people think that, there are aquariums almost everywhere, fish can be seen some other time. I've done that to at times.
dan: La Rochelle is a bit disapointing compared to this one or to Vancouver's Aquarium, the British ones I've never visited though.
