Short attention span
On a national scale, at least.
It’s December, it should be raining. In the past two years we’ve had very little rain here in Portugal. Last year in particular was a terrible year, resulting in drought during the summer in some areas.
People have spent the summer praying for rain.
In the end of the summer we’ve had some rain, same as the beginning of fall.
Now that the winter is nearing it’s sunny and during the afternoon it even is warm. Weird as it may be this time of year, I’ve seen people at the beach.
Everybody seems to be happy with this sunny weather.
Don’t they realize that if this goes on it will mean next summer will be even worst?
Don’t they realize the dams aren’t filling up as were supposed to?
Oh right, it’s nicer to go shopping for presents with nice weather… silly me.
Maybe this attention span problem is also the cause we keep having bad governments and people still vote for crooked politicians, they simply can’t remember…

I wouldn't blame the people on the beach...I'd be there if the weather was nice!
I would blame "shortsightedness" and selfishness!
Most people think:
"Oh, bugger it! By the time, this greenhouse effect kicks in, I'll be dead and buried!"
They don't realise that every little thing they do has a profound impact on our Earth.
I used to laugh at Karen when she washed out the empty tins and collected them along with old papers and glass bottles for recycling.
Now, I understand that if every household did their bit for the environment, the future could be safe for our grandchildren!
We musn't wait for the politicians! We know how little they've done since the Rio summit!
I'm with Cream on this one, we can't wait for the govts to do something.
But then, as Dcver says, we're all such shortsighted people. It takes farsighted people like Karen to do the right thing. The short sighted folks can't see further than their nose.
I'm working towards an exhibition using recycled materials. Maybe I'll get pics. and post 'em too.
I've been thinking a lot about the coming scarcity of drinking quality water. Forget the oil crisis folks, if this happens millions and billions could die, period. As I watch the potable (drinkable) water filling my sink to wash dirty dishes or sitting in my toilet bowl waiting to be fouled, I think about how wasteful we human beings are and how much we may be regretting that waste in years to come.
i don't get people who expect the weather is supposed to be sunny and beautiful ALL the time. doesn't there seem to be something wrong with that?
cream: Don't you worry about that, I get the feeling the next generation will be feeling the effects on their own skin soon. The worst part is that in Kyoto things seemed even worst than in Rio. And some countries simply assume they are above those problems and keep refusing to act by the Kyoto resolutions.
GG: It should start way before recycling, the most important thing should be reducing.
bunny jo: In fact potable water is already a problem in several countries, due to several factors.
tall glass: I'll have to go back to that post later. BTW, you can post active links here instead of just leaving the address, only spam links get deleted not friendly ones, be my guest.
cadiz: Wrong with what? I they feel nice it is not wrong... idiots.
A site that's easy to read, enjoyable, gives solutions, it's fun:
www.care2.com
isis: I won't do anything different. I'll keep my life just as it is. Of course we already recycle, reduce the waste, reuse all that we can,etc...
lee: Those are just jet contrails if you ask me. There are a few conspiracy maniacs that say otherwise, but all the scientists I've known so far dismiss the chemtrails theories. Thank you for the references anyway, I'll give those a read, and thank you for commenting.
GG: I'll read as soon as I can.
tacit: It feels nice, but it is a bad signal.
Dc: I used to feel DEPRESSED during our hot droughty weather we had in Hawaii a few years back due to constant El Nino conditions. Four or five years it went on, with very little rainfall...in a place that is used to tropical lvels of rain! Happy rto report the island is green again and these things just do seem to go in cycles. However, the idea that it is an island might not be a worry to people who keep moving over...they are starting to pull brackish water out of the Keauhou wells I hear!
Tall Glass: There is evidence that Hetch Hetchy was once as glorious as the Yosemite Valley itself. We will never know, will we? Have you heard talk that they are thinking of draining and restoring HH? Now that would be something!
kris: The worst thing is the drought always leads to a rise in the forest fires and one of these days this country will be a desert.
